What
is Capitalism? As it is said to be the foundation of the world we live in and a concept many have grown up with,
surely most people would have an answer. Yet what then are we defining, for capitalism
takes as many forms throughout the world as there are lived experiences with capitalism. To an American it may be middle
class suburban life, shopping at Home Depot and taking the kids to soccer
practice. While in the Czech Republic, capitalism came as a part of the
Democracy that came to save the country from communism. Just as in Sierra
Leone, capitalism is colonial pasts, foreign mineral companies exploiting
resources, and canned meats like “Spam” being “the good stuff” you bring out
for distinguished guests. While each of these places may share some common
themes today, there are completely different lived experiences, and completely
different understandings of daily life. In short, capitalism has no clear
definition, rather propensities and interpretations that make up a capitalist
mode of production that is experienced by many.
This
website will review different interpretations of capitalist economies and engage
with common themes and differences seen within these theoretical forms and
critiques.
